Long-time RSD Benefactors Give School $40K Gift
Dr. Leo and Mrs. Charlotte “Char” Landhuis’ Gift Focuses on Students
Rochester School for the Deaf (RSD) recently received a $40,000 gift from two, most-generous, long-time benefactors Dr. Leo and Mrs. Charlotte “Char” Landhuis.
$10 ,000 will be used towards new furniture for the RSD Girls’ Dormitory, and $30,000 will be used to help develop an American Sign Language curriculum for the RSD Elementary (Kindergarten – 5th Grade) Department.
Char is the most recent recipient of the RSD Perkins Founder’s Award, given in recognition of her nearly 50 years of service to the school as a volunteer, teacher, Board of Directors member, Advisory Council member and benefactor. Char served as RSD Board Vice President and was to become Board President the year when she and Leo moved to Missouri for his work as a Doctor of Ophthalmology. During the 13 years they lived in Missouri, Char and Leo would either drive or fly back to Rochester to attend the annual RSD Adventures in Education program. One year they even served as Honorary Chairs of the program.
Since their return to Rochester, Char has been a member of the RSD Advisory Council and the Adventures in Education Planning Committee. Throughout all of their years as cherished members of the RSD family, Char and Leo have always been generous benefactors of RSD’s children, never missing an opportunity to make a difference by lending financial support wherever its needed the most.
