In kindergarten through 12th grades, instruction at RSD includes:
• English Language Arts (ELA) • American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf Studies • Mathematics, Science and Technology • Social Studies • Physical Education and Health • Art and Music
The program for students is divided into three departments: RSD Elementary School is where students in kindergarten through 5th grade receive engaging learning experiences in multi-age classroom settings. Instruction is tailored to meet the needs of all learners, with special emphasis in the areas of English Language Arts and American Sign Language. Younger students benefit from collaborating with older children who, in turn, benefit by modeling teachers in their roles as mentors. In this way, students can take initiative and responsibility toward becoming self-advocates in their education. RSD Middle School, for children in 6th through 8th grades, provides instruction focused on expanding students’ knowledge. As children mature they become more responsible for their own academic success. Programs such as RSD Middle School Student Court also empower students to take responsibility for their behavior both in school and in the community. Frequent communication with parents ensures that families are very much involved in their child’s performance. While working with parents, RSD Middle School staff guide students as they discover the power they have to create a successful future through the choices they make. RSD High School is where students in 9th through 12th grades experience the world on their own terms. A wide array of academic classes and electives, including technology and vocational classes, are offered, and students can take classes with their hearing student peers at other high schools or BOCES. The Work Experience Program helps RSD high school students to achieve a successful transition to the working world. Faculty work with parents also to prepare them for the opportunities they have after their students’ graduation. Overall, the high school experience at RSD is one of inclusion, challenge, and opportunity. Upon graduation students receive a New York State Regents diploma, a New York State high school diploma, or a diploma for completing their Individual Education Plan (IEP).
